A Boy's Room on the Cheap

The following are some inexpensive decorating ideas for boy's rooms:

Curtains: Buying decorative curtains for your boy's room is going to be expensive. For example, to buy plain colored curtains will usually run you $15-$30. To buy printed curtains with a design or pattern will usually cost about $25-$45. So, one great tip for inexpensive decorating is to buy the plain colored curtains, then visit your local fabric store and purchase printed or patterned fabric to create tiebacks, or to make your own valance to go on top. You can often find a fun patterned fabric in a bargain bin and spend less than $5 on a yard, which you can use in many areas of your decorating, such as making tie backs, then using the rest as table cloth, or table runner for the bedside table, etc.

Walls: Paint is a very cheap way to add contrast and life to a room. For inexpensive decorating it is smart to take advantage of paint. Paint is cheaper and easier than wall paper, and can be used in so many different ways to create different looks and feels. For your boys room choose bold, bright colors, and consider only painting half the wall, then using a border or chair rail to transition. A border is a cheap way to add style and enhance the theme choice for the room. For example, visit your local home improvement store, you will see they have many options, such as cars and trucks, dinosaurs, sports, bugs, animals, etc. printed borders that are easy to apply, easy to remove, and very inexpensive.

Wall art: Usually, even if you paint your walls really nicely, you are going to want to hang something on the walls. There are a lot of inexpensive ways to create wall art that is worth looking at. One fun idea is to buy an unfinished shadow box at your local craft store (most craft stores have weekly coupons, for a percentage off, be sure to take advantage of these), and paint it to match the room. Then, use things you have around the house to fill the shadow box. For example, if your boy's room is an animal theme, consider putting some of the plastic toy animals he has in the box. If it is sport themed, this is a great use for your old baseball cards, sporting equipment that is out of date, etc. If you do not have things on hand, you can usually find something at your local thrift shop that can be cleaned up and work well. Another great wall art idea that is inexpensive is to make your own art, then go to a discount store like Big Lots, Ross, or T.J.Maxx and buy a piece of framed art that you like the frame. You can take out the existing art, and put your own in. Usually this is a cheaper option than framing it yourself, and will add a sophisticated look to your room.

Furniture: An inexpensive option for furniture is to use existing pieces that you have and give them a face lift with a fresh coat of paint or varnish, and new hardware. If you want, you can make your furniture really fun by purchasing themed hardware. For example, you can buy knobs that are shaped like sports balls, cars, dinosaurs, etc. These are easy to replace, and add just that little touch of detail that makes all the difference when decorating a room. If you do not have furniture that will work for the room, instead of buying new, apply the same idea of giving older furniture a face lift by looking online, in classified ads, and at your local thrift shops and second hand stores.
