Colors to Avoid in Kids' Rooms
There are some paint colors that you just have to wonder why people even have the option to pick them. Some make you just want to ask why to the paint maker. There are many colors like this and even though they are good colors, they wouldn't be great on a wall. There are many that aren't great for kids' rooms either. Let's take a look at some.
Extremely dark colors can look very ominous in a kids' room. You walk into the room and immediately feel closed in or like you walked into a giant pit. Stay away from them. They will also dampen your child's spirits and can really make the room an undesirable place to be.
Stay away from bright whites. If you paint your wall white, it will make it feel uninviting and cold. Walls need color. If you don't want to do much color, just paint the walls a cream color. That way they aren't screaming paint me or get away but are a nice soft color.
For carpet in a child's room, don't use light colors. Even if you don't allow food or drinks in their rooms, they will try to sneak it in anyways and sooner or later a spill will happen. Choose a nice neutral color. Carpet that is many different colors works so much better than say a light pink carpet. Light carpet shows stains extremely easily and doesn't last as long as darker or multi colored carpet. White carpet is even worse. It will show everything. So unless you plan on changing your carpet at least every two years, you had better pick something besides a light shade of carpet.
Shades that are too soft may backfire on you. If you paint a baby's room soft beautiful colors, you will probably have to repaint it when your child grows up. Pastels are great for babies but as kids get older, they might not appreciate the softness of the walls. If you are thinking more long term for your kids, don't paint pastels. You can still choose a light color, but pick one that will last for a while and one that you will be able to let your kids keep for a long time.
Don't pick colors that resemble gross things. If you think it's weird or gross looking on the paint sample, then you will want to throw up when it's all over your kid's room. Be especially careful of oranges and greens. They are the worst for weird colors. If you think it's gross, double check with someone. They can tell you if it's gross or not.
Try to make the furniture match the paint. It should be a given, but many people forget about their beds when choosing a paint color. Remember that not all wood goes with all paint. When you are thinking about a paint color and if it is right for your child's room, get a sample bucket of paint, the really cute tiny ones, and paint the wall. See if it works and if you like it. Don't paint the whole wall just a part of it. Do as many coats as you will be doing when you actually paint the wall so that you can see what it will really look like. Check it out for a few days before you buy the rest of the paint.
The wrong paint color can leave you upset and make your kids want to run away. They want a great looking room and so do you. You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars and tons of time only to find that what you did isn't so great after all.
