Decorating a Boy's Room

When it comes to boy's rooms there are some common decorating ideas that many people use. For example, they may use themes, certain colors and textures, etc. Let's take a look at some of the most common decorating ideas for boy's rooms:

Themes:

It is very common to use a theme when decorating boy's room. For example, if your son loves to play in the outdoors, you might do a bug theme. Following a theme makes decorating easier and more cohesive. For boy's rooms certain themes are more popular than others. The following are some of the most common themes and some fun ideas for how you can incorporate those themes in your boy's room.

Dinosaur theme: a fun decorating idea using a dinosaur theme is to find dinosaur shaped throw pillows to put on the bed or chair in the room.

Bug theme: a fun decorating idea using a bug themed is to buy a package of bugs at a dollar store and find a clear light fixture. Fill the light fixture with the bugs and secure in place. Every time your son turns on the light bug shadows will appear on the walls.

Animal theme: a fun decorating idea using an animal theme is to get a net and fill it with your stuffed animals. You can also choose Safari theme and use animal prints throughout the decor.

Sports theme: a fun decorating idea using a sports theme is to recycle older sports equipment to use as wall decor. If you don't have old sports equipment your local thrift shop and find some fun old tennis racket, dirty spikes or cleats, etc. Clean them up and use them in a shadow box, or secure directly to the wall.

Trains, planes, and automobiles: for a boy who likes automobiles, a fun decorating idea is to make the shelves and line them with vintage models of planes, trains, and automobiles.

Colors:

When decorating a boy's room colors often come into play. There are of course the common colors used for boy such as red and blue and green. However, color is one of the areas you can have a lot of fun with when decorating a boy's room. For example, let's say your son loves the New York Yankees, use the New York Yankees blue to create a pinstriped effect on the wall. If your son loves cars, paint your walls with a bright color. Then create a road using black-and-white. The bright color will really make your road pop. Of course, just because red, blues, and green are the common colors used in boy's rooms does not mean you can't take advantage of using them in your boy's room. Consider using special paint techniques combining colors painting multiple colors on the same wall, or stenciling graphics using different colors. Color makes a big difference so don't hesitate to use it in your boy's room.

Textures:

If you were decorating a girl's room you would want to embody feminist qualities such as soft and smooth, so you might choose fabrics like silks, satins, or fleece. The textures of fabrics would be smooth and feminine. For a boy's room, use texture to state their masculinity in an understated fashion. For example, choose heavier, rougher fabrics, corduroy, canvas, etc. Use more wood, heavier pieces of furniture, and looks and textures that are going to say that without question this is a room that belongs to a boy. This is a common way to turn a neutral theme, or color palette into a distinctly boy room.
