Decorating a Teen's Room

Decorating a bedroom for a teenager can be almost as hard as choosing out their clothes for the day. And if you're like every other American family finding the time to decorate a bedroom is difficult enough. Themes for teen rooms can be found all over the place, but the best place to start is with your own teen. This article will provide some helpful tips on decorating a teen's bedroom and point you in the right direction for a great outcome.

Choosing a theme
Most teens are pleased to incorporate a theme into their bedroom when they've finally decided to decorate it. The best way to choose a theme for a teenager is to look at their interests and hobbies and also to get their input on what they'd like to see in the bedroom. Some teens are into music, some are into sports, while others are into things like certain animals. Before you choose a theme make sure you talk to your teen so that you're not going with a theme that they're going to hate and you end up having to change it so they do like it. Once you have chosen your theme you can then begin to find matching bedding, window treatments, and other accessories that will add to the theme of the bedroom.

Consider your color scheme
Some teens are just fine with picking a specific object related theme to go in their room, but others might not want to head in that direction. So instead of just giving up on the idea, try considering a color scheme theme instead. Using a color scheme as the theme for the room gives a lot of flexibility and allows for tons of creativity. Color schemes are great because you don't necessarily have to match everything perfectly and you can be really creative when decorating.

Painting the walls
Once you have decided what you're going to be working with in the bedroom you will then want to consider the color of the walls. Painting the walls can really change the way a bedroom feels so make sure you get the colors right. You need to consider the theme of the bedroom, accessories, and other décor before you paint the walls. For example, you don't want to paint the walls pink if your teen has decided to use a black and white print for their bedding and window treatments. That just doesn't make any sense.

Furniture and feel
Two other things to consider when creating a theme in your teens bedroom is how it will feel and what kind of furniture you have in it. Of course you want it to match with what theme they have chosen but not only that. The teenage years can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming with emotional ups and downs. In creating your theme try and create a room that gives a sense of warmth and comfort. You want their bedroom to be a place of serenity that they can come home to feel good about themselves; a place to relax and kick back. You also want to think about the furniture you put in the bedroom. A desk and chair for a place to study is a must; a big bean bag chair or a place to site and relax might also be something to consider.

Choosing themes for teen rooms can take some time and patience. The important thing to remember is to get your teen involved in the decisions you make; after all it's going to be their bedroom and they have to live with it.
