Ideas for Painting Kids Furniture

A kid's room can be a lot of fun to decorate. You can use far more color and elements than you typically would in an adult or sophisticated room. Paint is a great way to add the color, but you are not just limited to walls. The following are some fun paint ideas for painting furniture to add color and elements of design to a kid's room:

Wood furniture: Wood furniture is a great thing to paint and make unique to your child. Paint can bring old furniture back to life, and add just the right splash of color in your kid's room. You can typically pick up a used, or older dresser, table, chair, etc. for a great deal at a thrift store, online on classifieds, or at a yard sale. Make it special for your kid's room by adding a fresh coat of paint. There are plenty of ways you can paint a piece of furniture, but let's start with some of the basic steps to make it nice.

Step one- clean it well. If it is dusty or dirty the paint won't stick as well, or last as long, and it is going to end up looking cheap and gross.

Step two: sand it down. If the existing paint or finish is coming up at all you will want to sand it down so that you have a smooth surface to work with.

Step three: prime it. Primer is inexpensive and will help the paint stick better and last longer. Kids are typically hard on furniture, so make yours last longer by taking the time to do this one extra step.

Step four: Choose a fun paint color. You want to choose colors that fit your child's personality and that pop in the room. For example, if your little girl's room is purple, and you are accenting it with reds, greens, yellows, and pinks, then paint her dresser a great yellow color. You can then find cute purple knobs or hardware to tie it in with the walls, bedding etc.

Use stencils and designs. Most people think that you can paint murals, stripes, designs etc, on the walls of your kid's room, but furniture should be a solid color. This is simply not the case. Imagine how cute a dresser for a jungle themed bedroom would be if it was painted a light brown, and then accented with green bamboo shoots, and giant panda bears. Paint is easy to redo, and does not cost a lot, so it can be really fun to try a cool design, or a mural, stripes, etc. right on your furniture. Of course, you will want to make sure if the furniture has a lot of design going on, that the walls are solid colors, or at least complimentary designs. You would not want to have too many places for the eye to see, it might undo the affects you are going for.

Paint the fabric of your furniture. You can change the look of your existing furniture with paint, but it does not always have to be on metal, wood, etc. You can paint fabric too. There are some really cool paints designed just for fabric. Consider buying plain colored chairs, etc. for your child's room, and then making them special by painting them. They will be completely unique, and can be painted in exactly what your child wants. Painting fabric is not as forgiving as painting other materials, so make sure you practice some so that you do not mess up.
