Really Great Themes for Decorating Your Infant's Room
Decorating a baby's nursery is not a task you want to walk into blindly. Having a plan at least in the back of your mind will make the process much easier than if you just shop around with no ideas at all. With a plan you can save some valuable time and money and probably be much happier with the design of your nursery for a much longer time. If you already know if you're having a boy or girl then that's one less thing you have to worry about when choosing themes for infant rooms.
What to consider?
As a new parent you may be swayed towards using the cute pastel colors that every baby loves and adores, but you also need to consider the long term. Do you want to re-paint and re-decorate everything in about four years? Pastel colors are great for a nursery however the baby will outgrow the colors and so will you. Save yourself a little money and give the bedroom a richer look that will last longer and you won't have to re-do in a few years.
Instead of trying to guess what you're baby is going to like in a few years stick with decorating the nursery in whatever designs you like. Use some colors that are common for boys or girls and then add some cool painting techniques if you want. Stay away from the frilly lace and the pale pinks and blues for now until you know that those are the colors they will want. It is also possible to consider just using neutral colors and then using colorful accents to decorate around the room.
How to choose a theme?
Since you haven't really had the chance to get to know your infant yet it may be difficult to choose a theme. They don't have any favorite books yet, or favorite colors, and they definitely don't play with any toys. So how do you decide what kind of a theme to use in the nursery?
Simplicity always works well when you're not sure what the personality of your child is going to be quite yet. Since you don't want to make anything too permanent in the event that one day you're going to know what they really like, stick to simple things. Instead of painting the walls a certain color, keep them neutral so that you can bring in whatever kind of accessory or window treatment you want. Keeping the walls neutral will allow you to change your theme over time.
Infants develop well when they have stimulation around them; not the bright colors at first, but blacks and whites. If you can think of a theme that has some black and white colors in it like safari animals and zebras, or something else then work with those colors for the first few months. Then as the baby begins to grow you can expand the blacks and whites to reds, blues, and yellows, until finally you have a colorful room ready to explore.
A better way to look at an infant's room in terms of themes is color themes. Mix and match patterns that will work with your décor and your wall colors instead of trying to put a full blown theme into the room. Themes for infant rooms should be simple and timeless in order to save you some money and time because you will without a doubt be changing it in the next few years.
